Education
The Cullum Centre, Canterbury
We were asked by our client The Canterbury Academy to put forward proposals for an SRP (Specialist Resource Provision) for students with ASD.
This building is a result of those proposals. It is arranged over two floors, with the ground floor being designed specifically for the ASD students and the upper floor being used by the main school pupils. The ground floor has been provided with an independent. secured, outside play area that opens directly into an open plan, communal area inside the building. Separate entrances have been provided to each side, one being accessed from within the school’s secure zone and the other from the service road, thereby allowing separation of ASD students from main school students at arrival and departure times.
Aesthetically the building has been designed to respond to the architectural language of the recently completed classroom block, which sits directly to the west, with a different and slightly simplified language facing the sports hall to the east.
The project was funded by KCC, The Cullum Foundation and from school funds.
