overview

Following the success of the Carpenters Yard scheme in Shepherdswell, OSG was delighted to work with WW Martin and English Rural Housing Association once again on this new rural housing scheme in West Kingsdown, to provide 13 high-quality new homes designed to address a clearly identified local housing need while respecting the character and environmental sensitivities of the village setting.

The scheme comprises a mix of affordable and private homes. OSG provided the technical design for the project on a Design & Build basis.

sustainability embedded from the start

Environmental performance and long-term operational efficiency were integral to the design strategy rather than add-ons. A fabric-first approach was adopted to improve thermal performance and reduce energy demand, supporting lower running costs for residents.

The design incorporates photovoltaic panels and air source heat pumps, helping to reduce carbon emissions and align with national sustainability objectives. Ecological considerations were also embedded across the site, including badger corridors, wildlife kerbs to support amphibian movement around drainage infrastructure, and buffer zones to protect and enhance local habitats.

policy-aligned, low-risk delivery

The development aligns with both local and national planning policies promoting high-quality, sustainable rural housing. Early coordination between architect, contractor and client supported a smooth delivery process, with design decisions tested against buildability, compliance, and long-term management considerations.

For housing associations operating within tight regulatory and governance frameworks, the project demonstrates how early design clarity and collaborative working can reduce risk while delivering strong outcomes for residents and communities.
