Chantry Community College, Gravesend

OSG were approached by a local contractor, W.W.Martin, to provide architectural services on a design and build basis for this replacement Primary School located in Gravesend, Kent.

W.W.Martin had been commissioned by the Education and Skills Funding Agency as a result of their position on KCC’s contractors framework and KCC are partial funders of the project, in addition to owning the site freehold. The original school building constructed in the 1930’s, was in a state of disrepair and was no  longer fit for teaching the modern curriculum.

This was a particularly complicated project as temporary accommodation needed to be provided whilst the old school was demolished and the new school erected in its place, this was due to the extremely tight site constraints restricting opportunities for siting the building.

The new building creates a focal point on the site frontage, which faces a park opposite and then over to the Thames Estuary. The primary entrance is defined and announced by landscaped terraces and a wide flight of entrance steps, coupled with the cladded feature element on the first floor. The new hall also sits facing the frontage, directly to west.
