WOODSIDE NURSERY, HOATH
|Team||Steve Gee, Jason Chandler|
Woodside Nursery is situated on Hicks Forstal Road, Hoath, in a rural location to the east of Canterbury.
The main house was one of a number of buildings on the site, which also included obsolete plant nursery greenhouses, industrial sheds, garages and a glass- covered swimming pool. The client wanted to expand the house dimensions dramatically, completely re-working the interior to provide open-plan living spaces to the south-facing rear of the property that would make the most of the views and natural daylight.
We also created a new wing, consisting of a two-storey extension, on the west side of the property, and added a floor to the east wing to create a visitors’ suite over two floors. A large first floor terrace area has been created at the rear, above the open-plan kitchen/ dining room.
While this project was originally conceived via dialogue with a builder, OSG Architecture moved on to undertake direct discussions and design development with the client. The project was challenging because of the large-scale remodeling of the existing building, so we had to consider the structural implications of the design very carefully. We also helped the client appoint a structural engineer early on, to ensure the scheme was feasible, prior to lodging a planning application.
Although the proposals effectively doubled the size of the existing property, the scheme achieved planning approval on first application. We believe that this was helped by spacious dimensions of the site and the detached rural setting, as well as the carefully considered design style, which Included improvements to the appearance of the existing building.
