WILLOW BANK, SANDWICH
|Team||Keith Owen, Jason Chandler, Glenn Brough|
OSG Architecture have been working on this phased scheme at Willow Bank, Sandwich, for a number of years now. The original site master-plan for this large-scale, mainly residential development was developed by our client's previous architectural firm and the first phase has been constructed using our building regulation and working drawings packages.
We are now re-designing the site master-plan to create spaces that have a greater resonance with the historic setting of Sandwich. This involves locating parking away from main street frontages, and creating more courtyard-style development areas that reflect the scale of the wider context.
We have kept a keen eye on the number of houses proposed in the previous scheme to ensure that the development as a whole remains economically viable. We have also had to ensure that the new master-plan dovetails with the already constructed development, and take into account the impact of the flood risk measures and highways routes already in place.
The portion of the site that alongside the main road into and out of Sandwich is of particular interest. Here, the original scheme proposed an apartment block, 'Barbican Court'. This is still included in the master-plan; however, we have redesigned this building to better reflect the nature of the site, mainly using existing foundations constructed for the previous scheme.
OSG is now lead consultant: we are working with highways and drainage engineers, a flood risk consultant, planning consultant, an ecologist, and a structural engineer.
