Valley lnvicta Academy Trust is a long-standing client of ours and we were delighted to be commissioned to design a new classroom block for the Valley Park site, to cater for an expanding school roll.
Our brief included the provision of 18 classrooms, a sixth form common room and a new library. The commission was part of a larger scheme providing a classroom block for the lnvicta Grammar site, together with shared sports facilities, including netball, and tennis courts and a 3G football pitch. The project was procured traditionally with drawings and a bill of quantities.
There were two particular challenges during the construction period. We were working with clients whose ideas evolved and changed throughout the project. While their enthusiasm was refreshing, it was fortunate that the construction team were proactive and flexible enough to incorporate on-site alterations such as room positioning, and knocking internal windows through stairwells and light fittings, without compromising timescales.
As a result, we realised that not everyone is able to visualise a 3D space from a 2D drawing and have now invested in Revit software to give clients and designers a better idea of 3D modelling.
The other challenge was the specification of German light fittings for the library. It was unfortunate that the supplier suffered from manufacturing delays and poor product craftsmanship. In the end, we reverted to the original specification with great results.
