The former St Philip Howard Primary School site, situated within Herne Bay, can be found to the north-west of Herne Bay Memorial Park.
The local vernacular is mainly characterised by residential dwellings with a wide range of house sizes and heights. The site has residential dwellings on its north, east and south borders, and a school on its west border.
The site consists of one piece of land approximately 1.2 acres in size, with a number of buildings which were previously part of the school. The scale of these is far greater than that of the other buildings along Avenue Road. An existing Grade II listed Georgian town house on the site is part of the principal street scene along Avenue Road.
The site is situated next to tennis courts and a recreational ground, providing good local amenities, and is within walking distance of the sea front, shops and other amenities.
Our design reflects the proportions of the Georgian town house and we used details from the façade to create a modern interpretation for the proposed town houses.
The floor plans for the new town houses are relatively standard; however, we have adjusted the ceiling heights to match those of the listed town house and reproduce its striking elevations. As the site is located on the corner of Avenue Road and Clarence Road, we have created a landmark apartment block with a very contemporary façade and a penthouse apartment with sea views.
