The Faversham Jubilee Centre, highly regarded by the local community, was provided as part of the redevelopment of the Whitstable Road EKP site. The gymnastics facility, in particular, proved to be so successful that it was extended to include a fitness suite.
Following the completion of this extension, OSG Architecture were commissioned to design a second extension, located on the southern end of the main gymnastics hall. The additional space was required to accommodate a new vault and landing pit and a much longer run-up suitable for senior gymnasts, rather than the short run-up and crash-mat arrangement provided mainly for younger children. During this work, we also had an opportunity to refurbish the old weights room and provide additional office and storage spaces.
We developed an extension that works seamlessly with the form and architectural style of the existing building, so much so that it would be very easy to assume that this area has always been part of the building. In design terms, the client’s brief has been perfectly fulfilled.
A number of issues arose during the project, mainly because we were required to include a sliver of adjacent land in the scheme, and excavations revealed that the ground was contaminated with asbestos and other debris. A further issue related to the poor specification of the original automatic ventilation system, which had long since ceased to function.
Fortunately, we had a good working relationship with the main contractor, Jenner, so these minor issues were resolved efficiently and the project was completed with only very minor slippage to the original completion date.
