Invicta Grammar School for Girls, an academy and part of the Valley Invicta Academy Trust, is situated on a site adjacent to Valley Park School.
The school needed to replace existing temporary accommodation and also required additional space to cope with rising numbers. Initially the brief was to design a CDT Block but after exploring various options it was decided to relocate humanities and dance/drama to the new building and refurbish existing classrooms for CDT. The accommodation includes 10 classrooms, two dance/drama rooms and a reading room.
The client team requested plenty of natural daylight and wanted the first floor reading room to have high ceilings. The final design made use of the steel structure and enabled the entire first floor to have an open ceiling void that followed the line of the pitched roof. Thanks to the use of state-of-the-art lighting, the teaching spaces and reading room provide a working environment that is both dramatic and inspiring.
Externally, we continued a recent theme of facing block work and aluminium windows under a pitched steel sheet roof. With curtain walling and sliding folding doors, the client’s wish for daylight was achieved.
